Chestnut Hill College Welcomes Renowned Local Singer
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Cabaret, jazz and big band musician, Paula Johns, known as “La Chanteuse de Jazz,” will perform at Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, October 23, at 7 p.m., in the East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall.
Michael Caruso from the Chestnut Hill Local said, “Her voice sports a wider vibrato than I usually like, but her glowing tone, unaffected projection, lilting phrasing, clean diction and rhythmic vitality more than compensated – and, I hasten to add, Johns was never in anything less than complete control of the vibrato, and she employed it expressively to communicate the obvious and not-so obvious meanings of the lyrics.”
Johns also, in collaboration with musician Dennis Fortune and WRTI-FM radio personality, Bob Perkins, wrote a music show called “The Great African-American Ladies of Song,” which incorporates Johns dressed and performing numbers from musical greats Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Marian Anderson and Aretha Franklin.
“Paula Johns enraptured the crowd. The statuesque, energetic performer stalked the stage and sang alternately with a voice like buttermilk poured over velvet, and the growl of a tigress,” said Bill Kingsley from The Sentinel-Ledger.
The concert, sponsored by the College’s biology and music departments, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Joseph Kulkosky at or 215.327.3340.
